(Updated 22/09/2020)

As I’m sure you are aware by now, that because of COVID 19 and the constant changes to the lockdown restrictions, weddings, handfastings, vow renewal and baby naming ceremonies and other family gatherings have been hit hard in an attempt to stop the virus from spreading further!

So what does this mean to you, when you are either planning a ceremony or the government laws and guidelines have changed and they are now affecting the ceremony you already have booked?!

As I understand it, (and my word it is so confusing and contradictory!!) the current restrictions, mean that couples and families who want to hold Celebrant-led ceremonies, either in public spaces, private gardens or non-COVID secure venues, must abide by the “rule of six” social distancing guidelines. That figure includes me as your Celebrant.

You, the couple/family are responsible to make sure that the law is adhered to in regard to numbers of guests present, and by complying with the latest track and trace advice. I will also have to carry out a risk assessment to comply with the laws and guideline advice, as part of my insurance and good practice within the Celebrant community.

If you have a ceremony in a COVID Secure venue, you are allowed to have more guests, but please check with your venue first, to see how may that will be at the moment. Depending on the venue, that figure may also mean you can discount suppliers such as photographers, musicians and catering staff as part of those number. Your venue will also have strict guidelines to follow, so they are the people to check in with and ensure those figures are correct.

My advice now is to plan for all eventualities. As much as I’d like to be positive, I am also a realist and I think COVID and the restrictions will be with us until at least Spring 2021.

Now is the time to discuss your options, with your family and friends, about the potential for sudden changes and be prepared for this to happen with less than 24 hours notice, based on recent Government changes!!

If you have planned for a large number of guests, begin to think about the 15 people, perhaps your closest family and friends, with whom you wish to celebrate your special day.

The remainder of your guests, I’m sure, will be totally understanding about the monumental amount of time, money, blood, sweat and tears you have put into preparing for your big day, and that you stand to potentially lose out massively if you have to cancel.

Some may also be relieved that they don’t have to put their health at risk either, by attending a large gathering and that they will be more than willing to celebrate with you in the future months, when we can all gather together again safely!

So be prepared to scale the guest list down, even more, if you are planning a ceremony outdoors in a public place or non-secure COVID venue, such as in your garden. You may only have the “Circle of Six” where I must also be included in that figure, as would photographers or other suppliers.

So, for example, that would mean you, the couple, myself, a photographer and two guests. This has now been made law and we risk being arrested and fined. No amount of tweaking or creative thinking can avoid this!

I will say, do not be too disappointed by this figure. Intimate ceremonies and elopements, with just either yourselves or a handful of guests, can be so amazing, incredibly special, magical and romantic. Again, you can look forward to celebrating with a huge party, perhaps for your anniversary?
